Cash injections to the tune of £37 billion have are to be handed out to three major UK banks, according to reports from the BBC.

The banks, Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds TSB and HBOS are to be the main recipients of funds from the Government bailout aimed at increasing liquidity amongst financial institutions in the UK.

The Government hopes that the bailout will enable UK institutions to restart inter-bank lending and enable them to offer loans and mortgages more freely. This, in turn, should increase general liquidity in the economy and reduce the chance of recession in the UK.

Onlookers hope that the scheme will encourage banks to reduce interest rates, making loans, mortgages and other types of business & personal credit cheaper and more accessible.

According to HM Treasury, the banks have agreed to work with the Government and support schemes to help struggling mortgage payers to retain their homes and also support the expansion of financial capability initiatives.

It remains to be seen whether the scheme will have the impact that is hoped, and whether it will have a positive impact on the consumers that are struggling with debt management in response to the market fallout. Early indications have shown a positive response from worldwide stock exchanges.
