Yoga and Neck Problems: What’s the Risk?

Firstly, a Yoga student, who has such a serious ailment, should get their doctor’s permission before starting to practice Yoga with a teacher. If possible, get a doctor’s referral to a particular Yoga teacher, who is more knowledgeable in this area. Many doctors often network with local Yoga teachers, studios, and ashrams, for the benefit of their patients.

Chair Yoga classes may be advisable in some instances. Yoga postures practiced during chair Yoga classes will not put pressure on the neck. It is also wise to find a teacher who has been thoroughly trained in the use of props, modifications, and completely understands your ailment.

Find a Yoga teacher who is understanding, gentle, and knowledgeable. At that point, set up an interview with your prospective Yoga teacher, and explain your ailment in detail. The methods, personalities, knowledge, and patience, of instructors who are teaching Yoga, will vary.

Some of the poses that I would not recommend would be: Sirsasana (Headstand); Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand); Halasana (Plow Posture); or any other posture that could cause severe compression on the cervical vertebrae (neck). Also, your doctor should be made aware of any “risky” movements and positions performed in a Yoga class, such as, chin locks, neck rolls, and fingers clasped behind the neck.

You will find it is important not to do any exercises or postures that hurt, even a little bit. Pain is your body’s way of telling you, “not to do that” and “stop now.” The Yoga exercises, that will help you the most, are those where you will feel a smooth and gentle stretch. If you don’t feel a gentle stretch, I suspect those Yoga poses are not doing you much good.

If any Yoga exercises hurt at all, stop doing them immediately. I have yet to see a student, patient, or client, benefit from doing any Yoga pose that caused pain. To continue further on this point: Any treatment, of any kind, (Chiropractic, massage, physical therapy, or Yoga), should be with the goal of less pain. Why do it, at all, if you are going to be in more pain?

Learning Yoga for a serious condition, such as a neck ailment, should be practiced under maximum supervision of a competent Yoga teacher. I would suggest at least one private lesson before trying a group Yoga class. A Yoga teacher may suggest, at least, a few private Yoga sessions, so that the student understands all the safety guidelines.

As educational as Yoga videos are, they are no substitution for the guidance of a competent Yoga instructor.

Durable medical equipment and Medicare

With costs of the most common durable medical equipment reaching upwards of $1,200, the need for payment by Medicare is substantial. This increased cost of medical equipment forces elderly persons to look to Medicare and the rules governing what is covered are often confusing and time consuming. Find a durable medical equipment supplier and rely on their expertise, experience and guidance.

Durable medical equipment is a health care device that helps the elderly and/or disabled person do daily activities easier, and includes such items as wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen tanks, and hospital beds. Even items such as mobility aids, medication dispensers, convalescent care products, rehabilitation equipment and more. Also, Federal housing agencies want to make a difference to the lives of elderly and disabled persons by providing financial assistance to homeowners and landlords to carry out home adaptations.

Medicare covers certain types of durable medical equipment under certain circumstances.

Under Medicare Part B, the supplementary medical insurance program, rental or purchase of durable medical equipment is covered. However, certain restrictions are set out which elderly persons need do be aware of when considering purchasing durable medical equipment through a medical provider.

These restrictions can cost the elderly person thousands of dollars if they are unaware of the restrictions governing coverage of durable medical equipment by Medicare.

Aiding the elderly person in pre-purchase determinations of what durable medical equipment Medicare will cover can result in substantial savings. For example, the most common denials include oxygen and hospital beds, and coverage is not available to residents in skilled nursing homes.

Consumers, attorneys, and providers of durable medical equipment should be aware of these restrictions as they can result in different purchasing plans for the elderly consumer.

How Do You Travel?

Most people nowadays seem to want everything to happen in a hurry. When they want it they want it right now and nothing should delay the process of getting it. This is also very true when it comes to going on vacation, just hop on an airplane and you are there. Very few are willing to spend a few days in a car or on a bus in order to get where they are going. Of course this time spent on the road trying to get there will take a few days of you actually being able to spend at your destination.

This is so true but at times half the experience can actually be what happens on the trip there. Ok, a bus might not be the most comfortable way of traveling but you sure can have a lot of interesting things happen while on that bus, not to mention all the different people you get to meet. Surely you meet people on an airplane too but still it is not the same. On a plane you are probably heading for the same destination and are probably going to see the same sights.

Traveling by bus you will meet people going everywhere because they will be changing busses in the different cities you will be stopping in. Generally you will also meet people from all walks of life on these trips and believe it or not you can learn a great deal from listening to their experiences. You can at times be amazed to hear what some of these people have encountered on their travels thru life, not only on that bus. Traveling by bus is also a way to be able to see the country without having to be behind the wheel yourself.

Have you ever even considered taking a train ride? For people with kids this can be a wonderful way of traveling since you are actually able to get up and move around. Besides, what child has not dreamt of riding on a train which at times will take you where no car or bus can go plus there is that excitement of being able to spend the night on it while you are traveling at high speed. Nothing is more soothing than to fall asleep in a sleeping wagon to the chugging of a train engine.

Another great way of traveling is by boat, no matter if it is a big cruise liner or a much smaller boat. The unpredictable waters can give you a ride of a lifetime. The thrill of going on an ice breaker in the middle of a winter storm can not be explained, only experienced. This also goes for being in deck on a beautiful summer night were all you can see is water no matter which direction you are looking in. Sometimes things can feel a little scary but it sure is an adventure you will never forget.

With this maybe you will reconsider before jumping on that airplane in order to hurry up and reach your destination. Travel and vacationing is so much more than just getting there and enjoying your 14 days before hopping back on that plane so you can hurry back to work. Try not to be in such a hurry, enjoy your time of and experience some of the different ways of traveling to your vacation destination.

Gaming laptops used to only be obtainable from niche resellers. The units were sold in insignificant qty’s but each laptops had a massive profit margin. The price was just too big to justify purchasing these types of laptop for the masses. They were like the ultimate of what was capable with laptop technology, the best laptop computers around. Having said that the large number of us most likely did not buy laptop computers of this type because of the price. Things appear as it they are set to change though because now the gaming portables market has caught the attention of larger manufacturers.

In contrast to the smaller system builders these companies know they can get even more profit. These days the mainstream notebook computer margins are extremely thin so it presents the opportunity for them to regain the gross profits. Local retailers not able compete with them in swaying people to buy laptop computers. I wonder whether this would be the downfall of smaller retailers? Basically what I see happening here is that the bigger companies dropping prices in the beginning to get rid of the competition from littler resellers. I think purchasing from a well know brand additionally provides the perception of greater value.

The buzz being created in regards to the latest brand name gaming notebook computers is making consumer perceive them to be the best laptop computers in history. I reckon this would still be the ray of light for smaller manufacturers though. I can see the option of getting to customize the notebook to be an important purchasing decision. Well versed in the technology, these types of consumers are savvy to what specifications to look for. In choosing speed and aesthetics, these buyers typically favour the former.

Surely from the customers way of seeing things, its a great thing. As this drives down the prices even greater, the latest technology will become increasingly obtainable to the customer. I predict even industry insiders will have a hard time seeing where the market is headed. New product introductions should prolong premium prices. We will discover what we can anticipate from the gaming notebook sectors large players.

Adding Rustic Tuscan and Italian Country Decor to Your Kitchen

Maybe it’s the fresh spring breezes wafting through the air, but I’ve had rustic décor ideas bouncing around in my head for the past few weeks. When, I open up my windows the air smells like spring and I keep dreaming of the Italian countryside.
Bring it on in, I say!

I’ve been collecting and experimenting with some new rustic Tuscan ideas in my own kitchen, I think the kitchen is the best room to start incorporating elements of this style of design. I blame it on my mother who always stopped to collect pine cones, leaves, grape vines and other natural materials to use in her home décor when we were kids, but I just love to bring natural things from the outdoors in.

I like to add things like a bunch of lavender tied with a silk ribbon as a wall decoration and of course my plants in little aged terra cotta pots are equally happy on the inside window sill or outdoors in the front garden. I’ve found some wonderful new lines of rustic animal figurines (roosters, hens, nesting hens and even a large country dog to guard
your garden gate or hearth). They add such a nice touch in a corner cabinet or on a dining hutch or sideboard.

Another of my favorite quick ways to add a bit of rusticana are terra cotta candles. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, I’ve gilded the rims on some of them with antique
gold paint (and left a bit of the aged green colored terra cotta peeking out underneath).
If you’re like me, you love to arrange and rearrange objects, so these are great to move around as your mood changes. You can light them for a romantic dinner, although I think they’re a bit too pretty to burn.

I also love to hang a Tuscan or Italian inspired plate above the stove, they look beautiful against terra cotta or rough Italian tiles. You can use pretty much anything with colors that complement your décor. As always with artwork, select something that is meaningful to you, something that is calming or speaks to you - you’ll be looking at it every day!

Another great thing about rustic décor is that it doesn’t have to be expensive. Even if you can’t afford authentic Tuscan furniture, which can get quite pricey, you can still get a great look by adding in authentic touches. The Tuscan style homes we often see are actually restored farmhouses, the style originated from the needs of working farms (and often the home is a restored granaio or grain house!) How fun to add in some rustic wood beams, (I remember my Mom actually found some for her kitchen years ago and “aged” it and made it look worn by adding marks with a hammer and other tools. Then she stained them a dark color and they sure added a great touch to the kitchen). Even if you don’t want to go to that extreme, you can work with your existing furniture and add in some nice touches, like Italian ceramics or interesting placemats and small décor items.

I’ve found some lovely kitchen signs that say “Cucina Paradiso”, you can look for them in our Villa Marketplace section. They are made from resin and have marks in them so they look antique. I think they add a nice whimsical touch and look great against a wood background. When I cook, I look at that sign and smile thinking of my Nonna and the wonderful things that came out of her kitchen. No wonder I think of the kitchen as a paradise! So, here’s to creating your own version of Cucina Paradiso, hope this inspires you!!

Meyer Lansky, the Legend

I was 26 years old, working for a real estate investment company in Los Angeles, and answering to my father’s every request. I was sent to Miami to report on the Carriage House, one of the apartment high-rises our company owned. My father said as long as I was in Miami I should meet his good friend Meyer, whom he referred to as Guy. Milton is my boss. Teddy is Meyer’s wife:
The Carriage House on Collins Avenue was miserably neglected. It was worn around the edges, the paint peeling, the carpet frayed, and the glass windows smudged with dirt. The lobby was the centerfold of action; women dressed in bathing wraps and high-heeled sandals, and men in melon, and lime colored suits. There was an abundance of light, and a distinctive smell of chicken soup. Great numbers of Jewish men and women shuffled through the lobby in flip-flops, carrying big beach bags recognizable by their Yiddish dialect.

After a quick tour, I was whisked off to a lovely ocean front suite. I changed clothes and went looking for the Fontainebleau, the hotel where we were to have vacationed had my mother not died. I walked through lofty empty dining rooms, decorated with ornate chandeliers and furnishings, imagining the gaiety that once played, like an old forgotten movie set. The rooms were empty, and the obvious absence of guests or activity anywhere gave it a ghostly appearance. A heaving sadness for the place, and for the loss of my mother collided and I left in tears.

My emotions were replaced with getting ready to meet Meyer Lansky and his wife,Teddy. By now I’d heard the rumors, seen the Godfather, and knew that he was a living legend. All my life, I heard his name mentioned. My father said he had not spoken to Meyer in 20 years, that would be 1950, the year my parents moved to Houston to start a new life.

At seven o’clock, I was standing in front of the Carriage House dressed in an outfit my father insisted on picking out. A vintage four-door gray Mercedes pulled up in front. Neither one moved, but as I opened the door, Teddy grasped my hand.

“Oh my God! Look Meyer, she is exactly like her mother!”
He turned around once, took me in, and grinned. His face was a historical map; the lines were cut deep as roads, and the curve of his nose twisted, but his eyes; unmistakable eyes that see right through you.
“Oh darling I’m so thrilled to see you. Meyer, isn’t she just exactly like Lucille?” Teddy peered through twinkling brown eyes, radiating warmth and eagerness. She had a rapacious smile, petite frame, with lovely blonde hair pulled back at the nape of the neck. My father called her Tiger because she was untamable.

“No. She looks like Allen,” Meyer protested.
“Oh Meyer, she’s her mother’s image, she would be so proud of you, wouldn’t she Meyer…”
“Teddy will you please shut up so Luellen can speak.” Meyer never turned around, he glanced at me through the rear window. They continued to argue about whom I looked like, and both agreed it was a blessing I took after my mother, because she was a saint. He drove tentatively, hitting the brakes every few feet, while Teddy chided him about his driving. When we arrived at the restaurant, he faced me directly for the first time. He just stood there and examined me without hesitation. He was dressed in an open necked shirt and sports jacket.

Though his face was creased with deep permanent lines, when he smiled they all melted together, and looked almost youthful.
“So tell me, is your father still as sensitive as he used to be?” he said. I didn’t know how to answer. I had never thought of my father as sensitive.
“Well, he yells a lot.” I answered. He chuckled and nodded his head in agreement. Teddy took my hand and we went inside the restaurant. It was like meeting family, not friends. They made so much fuss over me, I felt remiss in not meeting them before. They wanted to know everything about my life. I was taken aback, and wished my father had been sitting with us. He sat very still; Teddy was kinetic and consumed with the turmoil of emotions.

I was not born when these people knew my father; my parents were not even married.
“So, he yells a lot does he?” Meyer continued once Teddy stopped talking.
“Yes, in fact his friends call him the “Warden.” They both burst out laughing. They were sharing something beyond my comment. Meyer ordered, suggested what I might like, and picked out a bottle of red wine. Teddy sat beside me intermittently squeezing my hand and dabbing her eyes with a Kleenex. She immediately wanted to talk about my mother. She could not say my mother’s name without a tear in her eye.

“Your mother was ravishing, and I don’t mean her looks, though she was prettier than any movie star, she was beautiful on the inside. She had a quality of kindness and sincerity every one adored.” Meyer’s eyes bonded to mine, and I felt him almost whispering to me. He was examining my character, what I was really thinking, if I was hiding conflict, what was in my heart, and if I could be trusted. His posture was relaxed, his mind was intense.

“We loved Lucille, everyone did,” Meyer interjected sadly. He talked about my father in the very same praiseworthy fashion my father talked about him. I did not sit there thinking, this is the Meyer who collaborated with Frank Costello, Lucky Luciano, and Ben Siegel to operate casinos and racetracks all over the country. I did not think of him as any sort of criminal, mobster or organized crime boss. My interest was what he knew of my father and mother, what stories could he share with me. Maybe he could tell me something concrete about my mother’s life. Meyer’s discerning eyes crinkled up when I asked a question. After a glass of wine, and we relaxed, it was my turn to ask a question.

“When did you meet my mother?”
“I can’t remember,” he answered. “A long time ago.” he skirted over my question just like my father.
“How do you like your job?” he asked.
“I love it.” His warm eyes darkened as I spoke. He encouraged the discussion and yet I felt he was displeased with my answers. I wanted to impress Meyer because I wanted to make my father proud.
“What exactly are doing on this trip?” he asked.
“I’m reviewing the rents, and looking over the condition of the property.” I answered. Teddy smiled supportively but Meyer suddenly went silent.
“I have a number of friends who live at the Carriage House.” His eyes pierced mine.

“You do?” I replied dumbly.
“Yes I doand they live on social security every month, fixed income. Are you going to raise their rents?” he asked. I blushed red as the tablecloth. He continued eating.

“NO NO! Just tell me who they are and I can exclude them somehow,” I said in haste. Teddy pressed Meyer with her delicate hands.
“No, you cannot do that. I just wanted you to know is all,” he said in finality. It was just like my father, that crescendo of stupidity that comes when my father lays a trap for me. Teddy interjected something to break the seriousness, and we returned to lighter conversation. My easiness ceased at that moment. I could think of nothing else than the inconvenience of my job at that moment.

Later that night I allowed myself to recall all the things I’d heard about him over the years, shaved by years of denial. I shuddered to think how he felt about my raising the rents on his friends. Guys he played poker with once a week, while Teddy sliced corn beef sandwiches. My father casually informed me that Meyer lived at the Carriage House, before moving to the Imperial House. He knew all about Milton and about my job. I had the power to raise or lower rents. I wanted to bury my head in the sand, but my father’s words reclaimed my denial.
“This is what life is about, making decisions that you can face years later.”

I knew not everyone who assumes the veneer of affluence has money. Not even Meyer Lansky who reporters allege was worth over a million. My father facilitated a wealthy lifestyle, but he lived month to month. He may have had a million one day, maybe he had it a year, but eventually the bankroll is gambled. That is what they do with money. If these men invested their money, they would be richer than the government. Maybe that is what worried the government.

My relationship with Meyer was limited to what we had in common; we loved my father. The next time I called Meyer and Teddy to have dinner he was gratuitously polite, “We don’t want to interfere with your job.” I sensed a twitch of sarcasm; just enough to let me know that he was on to me.
We exchanged more than an exaggeration of emotions the second night. I could not extort any specific information from either one of them. Meyer was interested in discussing my job.

“Are your people are going to convert the Carriage House to condominiums?” Meyer caught me off guard again. I knew he and my father had talked.
“I haven’t heard that. Why do you ask?” I said.
“I want to protect my friends,” he answered, and a slip of a smile passed over his lips. “I’ll tell my father right away if I hear anything. And about the rents; I m not recommending an increase on any units, until we refurbish the place. It needs a lot of work.” Teddy took hold of my hand.

“That’s very thoughtful,” she said.
“Don’t let me interfere with your job,” he emphasized.
“I hope I can interfere, on your account.” He nodded acknowledging our little understanding. I got a glimpse of the Meyer that negotiated peace treaties between different factions of the underworld, with Cuban emissaries, Army Generals, and the Israeli government. Meyer emulated power, without any gestures, or expression. It came from inside. At the end of the evening, I dove for the check like I’d seen my father do a thousand times.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“Meyer, my father will kill me if I don’t get this check.” I said in jest. He chuckled and captured my focus, while he snapped the check right out of my hand.

I could see how difficult it would be to cross this man. Part of America’s history was sitting with me that night, a man that could weave true stories around a thousand lies. I did not know much when I met Meyer, only stories about “Murder Inc,” and his friendship with Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello. What penetrated most was what I’d heard about Benny Siegel’s murder. I thought about that after I returned to Los Angeles, and why my father had not spoken to Meyer in twenty years.

Pay Attention!

One of the biggest complaints women have about men is that they just don’t listen. This can cause big problems in the relationship. Sure, you may hear the words, but are you really absorbing what she is saying? It’s a serious mistake not to pay attention or take her words seriously and could mean the ultimate failure of the relationship if that bad habit continues.

Women don’t just talk to hear their own voices. Most times they’re trying to get a point across to you. Listen…I mean really listen to what they’re telling you. Granted, sometimes it may seem as if she doesn’t have anything of real importance to say, and in your opinion, she’s just babbling on about nothing. But you’d better listen anyway.

If your mind is wandering or you interrupt her with a comment about something totally unrelated to what she’s talking about, she’ll feel you simply don’t care about her and this can lead to hurt feelings and resentment on her part. Over time, this can seriously damage the relationship or cause its demise. You should never dismiss what a woman has to say as trivial or ignore her. Don’t just hear the words — absorb them like a sponge.

Sometimes a woman may feel the need to vent her feelings if she’s upset or frustrated about something in her life. It may or may not have anything to do with you personally, but you are her sounding board. She’ll likely ask you later what you think, so you better be paying attention so your answer makes sense and relates to the subject at hand. If you’ve been tuning her out, your inattention will likely anger her, cause hurt feelings and resentment, and make her feel unimportant to you.

Show her you’re interested in what she has to say. Ask her pertinent questions and listen to her answers. Sympathize with her and show her you understand how she’s feeling. To maintain a strong relationship with her, you must be her best friend and allow her to feel free to communicate with you about anything. Women are more verbal than men. She needs to know you care enough about her to listen when she speaks.

Think about it…how would you feel if you were telling her about an important event in your life and she interrupts with, “I saw the cutest dress today that would match my new shoes just perfectly.” How would you feel? You’d probably be taken aback and think she couldn’t care less about what you were saying to her. It wouldn’t make you feel very important to her, would it? Of course it wouldn’t.

Mutual respect is listening to one another and caring about one another’s thoughts, feelings, wants, and needs. It’s taking into consideration the feelings of the other person as well as your own feelings, particularly when making decisions that affect both of you. It’s just that simple.

There is nothing so frustrating to a woman than when she is pouring out her heart and soul to you only to realize you haven’t been listening at all. Whenever a woman begins a conversation with, “We need to talk” or “I want to talk to you”…it’s time to tune out everything else going on in your brain and listen to every word she says. Those two phrases are an indication she’s about to say something important and you need to pay attention.

Learning to listen is a big part of communication. The ability to communicate is a very important part of every relationship and that skill will serve you well in many aspects of life. Mastering the art of communication is vital to your relationships with women.

What Do You Really Want from Yoga?

August 10th, 2008 August 10th, 2008

Are you looking for a healthy mindset, fitness, spiritual guidance, holistic health, self-improvement, success, or just more oxygen? Yoga can deliver all of these, but I doubt you find all of this “under one roof.” The reason is that there are many kinds of Yoga, and some ashrams, or Yoga schools, will address some of the above-mentioned needs as priorities.

Do you ever wonder why some people are so successful in life? I am not talking about someone who has “everything handed to them.” What I am referring to is someone who has taken the time to know what they want from life, pursues it, and then attains it. This comes from self-analysis, meditation, and goal setting skills.

Do not confuse yourself with someone else’s dreams or expectations of you.
You must know your particular strengths, weaknesses, passions, and desires to move forward in your Yoga practice. Remember when you were a child and adults asked you, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

If you are not sure, you should compile a list of ideas. Here are some things to consider when deciding “how to find yourself” and “where to go from here.”

What is your concept of happiness?

Please be honest with yourself and go after your dreams. You cannot abandon responsibility, but you can make small changes in your lifestyle. Wake up each day and pursue your goals with happiness in your heart.

What are your real passions, obsessions, and desires?

These are ideas you think about all the time. Listen to your heart; the answers are within. They should not cause harm to anyone and should be morally sound. Whatever they are, they will keep you going when you have any doubts. This is your fuel for daily motivation.

What does any of this have to do with Yoga?

Everything - Yoga is a daily path of self-discovery and self-improvement. Yoga literally means “Unity,” and applies to all things. If you know yourself, you can help yourself. Help usually starts from within. Most of us have to ask for help, and you must know when, and who, to ask.

Seek and find the Yoga that will help you find yourself. Yoga’s many branches are over 5,000 years old. They are the origin of many self-improvement and health maintenance systems. Achievement is realized by habits. You alone, have the power to create or change your habits.
